Good afternoon- I want to thank the Onaga Hospital and Clinic in working with us over the past couple months to make antigen testing available for students who have been placed on quarantine and allowed them to return to school. The school district has paid for these antigen tests through October 6, 2021. Starting on October 7, the school district will no longer be paying for antigen testing at the hospital. Instead, USD 322 will be offering on site antigen testing for USD 322 students and staff at the school beginning Friday, October 8. This service is free. Here are the important details listed below- If your child is quarantined and you want to have them do the daily antigen test that allows them to attend school (wearing a mask) while in quarantine, the parent/guardian must call Gayla at the HS office by 2:30 each weekday. Gayla then submits the numbers of students to be tested the next morning to the hospital and our school nurse, Sierra Valburg. They then determine what amount of staffing is needed for the next morning. If more than 5 students call in, the hospital will provide staff to perform testing on-site at the school. If only a few students are scheduled to test, testing will be offered from 7:45 am-8:30 am Monday- Friday. If more than 5 students testing, times will be offered starting 7:30-8:30am (must call in to Gayla the day before by 2:30 pm for appt the next day- no walk ups). The location will be at the north gym. Enter through the gray doorways North of the gym. There will be a set up there for kids to get tested and also wait while results are being determined. If they test negative, the nurse will send a slip with the student to give immediately to Karen or Gayla upon entry into school. If a student has a positive antigen test, a back up PCR swab will take place to confirm it is a true positive and parents will be notified to have their child quarantine at home. The district will provide a parent consent form that is good for the remainder of the 21-22 school year that will be provided on site, on the school website, in both elementary/secondary offices and in the mailbox folder we have posted outside of the doors at the west main entrance to the high school. We are in the process of putting those together right now and will have posted on Thursday, October 7.

It's homecoming week in Onaga and it culminates tonight on the gridiron as the Wetmore Cardinals come to town for a league and district tilt. The Buffaloes are coming off of a 68-12 stomping of Linn last week and will look to continue their winning ways against the Cardinals tonight at 7:00pm when the two teams kickoff at the Rosenfield Sports Complex. The crowning of the king and queen ceremony will take place at 6:15pm, then during the national anthem you can expect some surprises from our Onaga Fire Department. Also, tonight fans will see the return of an Onaga football tradition when the touchdown cannon makes its return to the field. Although this won't be an every-game occurrence like it used to be, the return of the cannon for the first time in over 15 years will be a welcomed site. The team is also unveiling their new jerseys tonight, which happen to be a nod to Buffalo teams from decades ago. So come check out the new-look team as it continues to look impressive on the field, and enjoy the festivities this evening for homecoming! Good luck tonight boys, GO BUFFALOES!!!

As juniors and seniors begin taking college visits, please check out the document linked below from Counselor Polk. It provides great questions to ask on visits to make sure students find the right fit for them. They should visit the colleges that interest them and ask LOTS of questions while you’re there. This document gives students, and parents, a great plan to seek the information needed to find the right college choice. https://5il.co/zphx

Congratulations to Maria Krohn! On Friday, Maria's hard work paid off when she set the girl's school record for Hang Clean when she cleaned 170 pounds. Maria broke the record which was actually set by her sister Laura two years ago. Maria is also only a sophomore, so expect this record to only get bigger and for others to fall over the next couple of years! Hard work is something Maria not only doesn't shy away from, but seems to enjoy. She routinely is found in the weight room after everyone else has left trying to reach her goal that day for different lifts. She is found in the gym after practice working on things by herself when the school is otherwise cleared out. And this fall she is doing all of that while dual sporting, starting on the volleyball team and running the fastest girl's time for the team at each cross country meet thus far! The most successful athletes, no matter the sport, are those that spend time on their own perfecting their craft. Maria epitomizes that, setting a standard of excellence for Onaga athletes and being a role model for future Buffaloes. Congratulations Maria, keep up the hard work!

Living History Day was held in Havensville on Sept. 10, 2021 this year and one of the things that took place was an Art Show. There were multiple High Schools with art submissions in the contest, and one Onaga High Schooler did very well. Sophomore Atalie Conger enter a watercolor painting into the contest and took home 3rd place among the contestants. Nice job Atalie, keep up the good work!

The junior high and high school JV volleyball teams are in action tonight in Onaga for an unorthodox schedule of games. The junior high girls will begin the night at 5:00pm with a varsity game against St. Xavier, while the B-team junior high girls take on Flint Hills Christian. Following that, in a newly scheduled game, the Flint Hill Christian High School team is sending their JV up for a matchup against Onaga High School's JV team around 6:00pm. During that time, Flint Hills and St. Xavier's junior high teams will be playing as well as part of the previously-scheduled junior high tri. Then, wrapping up the night will be the junior high girls taking on Flint Hills around 7:00pm. As always, if you can't make it out this evening you don't have to miss out on the action. Just head over to the district's website, usd322.org, and click on the orange button on the homepage to get to the NFHS Network where you can see all of the games tonight. The high school softball team is getting a facelift for its field this weekend and it's one that will benefit the community as well. With serious upgrades needed to their field, plans are in place at this time to replace the fencing from dugout to dugout, and in the process get new dugouts as well. This is a joint effort between the high school, city, and fair board and has already seen extensive planning to get the job done. Part of that job includes tearing down the existing fence in that area of the field. In getting this project complete, using volunteer work to take down the old fence was vital to the plan. Mayor Rod Tucker has been generous in lending his truck to load and haul off materials, and Joe Hochstedler has been benevolent in lending his lift to work on the taller poles. Now, the three entities involved are in need of volunteers to help get the job done. At 9:00am on Saturday morning the team will be at the north baseball/softball field to begin tearing down the old fence. Anyone who is willing and able to lend a hand would be greatly appreciated. Again, this is a volunteer job that will benefit the high school softball team, the city's rec teams, and the Pottawatomie County Fair all at once. If you are available and willing to bring yourself, a pair of gloves, and any tools that might be helpful in the are of destruction, come lend a helping hand on Saturday morning! Thanks in advance for considering helping USD 322, the City of Onaga, and the Pottawatomie County Fair Board in getting this project done!

For the first time in over a decade, the O-Club is back at Onaga, resurrecting a school club that started under Coach Rosenfield well over a half-century ago and continued to thrive under Coach Lee for several more decades. Tonight the organization appeared for the first time in 15 years as they held their first fundraiser at the high school volleyball team's quad. It was a HUGE success and it wouldn't have been possible without several parents donating food and time, as well as the 37 lettermen athletes at OHS who make up the reformed O-Club that put in the work to make the night a success. Thank you to the parents that helped out tonight, and to the athletes who have made the commitment to bring this club back to Onaga!
