A Musical Calling is Answered
By Willow Hochstedler
Onaga Junior/Senior High School recently hired a new band clinician. At the beginning of the year, there was no band teacher to fill the position. Thankfully, Mary Pennington stepped up and made the decision to take the empty position. Our band kids were very thankful Mary decided to teach them, as many students were very disappointed that they weren't going to be able to participate in band. Mary Pennington said “I couldn’t sit back and do nothing when there were children who might benefit from something. Music is an outlet of expression and the children of USD 322 needed to have that opportunity.”
This year, our band has performed at the homecoming pep rally and home football games. The band brings entertainment to our fans and support to our athletic teams. Many enjoy hearing and seeing the band play at games because they bring energy and get everyone pumped up. Their support is very much appreciated by all athletes. The band students' enthusiasm and spirit set the tone for the whole night. Mary enjoys the atmosphere that her students create. “I love their enthusiasm and energy. Many of the students are eager to learn and willing to try a new piece of music or help others with their parts.”
Our band students are exhilarated to have the opportunity to participate and be a part of the band. Band student Lillie Weiser said “After hearing that I wouldn’t have the ability to compete in something that I qualified for state in the past two years, I was crushed! I am so grateful to our administration and Mary for giving me and my classmates this wonderful opportunity!” Band can be very important to some students. Band can give students the opportunity to be proactive, work together with others, and help students to develop patience. USD 322 is very thankful to have Mary this year and we cannot wait to see the improvements and success of our band!
