The annual spelling bee took place on Friday in Onaga when nine grade school and junior high students showed off their spelling knowledge on the auditorium stage. After several competitive rounds, Lillie Weiser, Gavin Weiser, and Vivian Berges were the only three remaining. The three of them went several more rounds before Vivian spelled a word incorrectly, leaving only brother and sister Gavin and Lillie left.
Eventually, the tricky word "conkers" tripped up Gavin. His older sister Lillie spelled the word correctly, then spelled the word "dingoes" to win the competition. Both Weisers will head to the county spelling bee with an opportunity to compete in the state spelling bee on the line.
Congratulations to all of our spelling bee competitors who participated on Friday, and good luck Lillie and Gavin in St. Marys!
