Mr. Kufahl's "History of Onaga & Pottawatomie County" class has been taking advantage of the beautiful weather and doing some exploring of some of the places they've talked about in class. Beginning with the time period leading up to Onaga's creation, the students learned about the town of America City. That is where the first settler of the Onaga area (Moses Day) got off the Parallel Trail and headed south to start the first town in our area. The first couple of photos are students in the class exploring the old America City schoolhouse. The town Moses Day formed was Vienna, so the class then went south and drove around the area where the town used to sit to look at what little is left of it. After that, they went out to the Vienna cemetery and talked about people like Major Jenkins who were prominent members of the community in its infancy. Finally, the class visited and discussed the other main towns in the area that many future Onaga area residents settled. First, they explored the history of Duluth and Neuchatel, then they went to see what few remnants were left of Pleasant Valley. When visiting the cemetery there, the students got to learn how to "witch" graves. Most believed it to be some sort of sorcery, some were able to do it right away while others took several attempts, and one refused to try it at all out of fear it would lead to being haunted. For those that it took a little longer to work, when they were finally able to see the rods moving in their own hands there was a lot of excitement (see Jackson Kolterman's celebratory backflip in the last picture). It's been a great start to the year learning about and exploring our local history, and there is a lot more to come!

The school's annual flu shot clinic will be held on Tuesday, October 15th, this year from 10:00am to 11:30am in the auditorium of the High School. A consent form has to be signed in order to receive the flu vaccine, and those forms are due by next Tuesday, October 8th. Please note this is not a free flu vaccine clinic.
